Theatre Healthcare Assistant

Full-Time position (37.5 hours per week - rostered)

Part of the Affidea group, Hillsborough Private Clinic provides Ophthalmology, ENT, Podiatry, Gastroenterology, Urology and other services and treatments in Northern Ireland. Working with the leading consultants and surgeons in the country, Hillsborough Private Clinic is renowned for the Quality care and service.

We are seeking a Theatre Healthcare Assistant to join our team in Hillsborough.  As a Theatre Healthcare Assistant, you will be required to support our nursing staff, delivering a high standard of care within the theatre environment that meets the needs of patients.  This is a great opportunity to develop and enhance skills across a range of specialties.  Specialty specific training will be provided.

Responsibilities:

- Assist with patient care needs under the supervision of registered nursing staff.
- Carry out clinical duties as delegated by registered nursing staff.
- To report to registered nursing staff care given to patients.
- Participate in the admission and discharge of patients in conjunction with the multi-professional team as directed by registered nursing staff.
- Carry out clinical observations such as pulse rate, blood pressure, temperature and recording findings.
- Escort patients to and from clinical areas.
- Carry out clerical duties, including preparation of patient documentation, filing of notes and booking of appointments.
- Maintain the confidentiality of all information regarding patients/service users at all times.
- Clean theatre/consultation rooms (including equipment) following each case and work in conjunction with the nursing team to ensure a safe and clean environment is provided and maintained.
- Assist with clearance of theatres at the end of the case/day, including placing wrapped used medical devices into designated CDU trolley/container for collection/delivery.
- Assist with endoscopy lists ie hanging and washing scopes.
- Remove waste (including secured sharps bins) from theatre/consultation rooms and label in accordance with current processes/procedures and dispose into appropriate waste bin.
- Ensure theatre is stocked appropriately at all times and that systems in place are adhered to daily to ensure the same.
- Plan for theatre lists on a daily/weekly basis to ensure all relevant supplies are in place in advance.
- Replenish sterile packs/theatre supplies and store in the correct area;
- Carry out monthly stock takes.
- To act as ‘runner’ for the scrub nurse during theatre cases.
- Integrate fully into the theatre team and also provide support to the wider team as necessary.
- Assist with endoscopy lists, including hanging and washing scopes.
- Replenish supplies of hand towels, soap etc as required.
- Manage used laundry in accordance with company policy.
- Check and maintain clean linen supplies.
- Safely make up cleaning products in accordance with the manufactures’ instructions and in line with COSHH regulations.  Dispose of all used cleaning solutions.
- Assist with clinical audits as required.
- Participate fully in the annual appraisal process.Any other duties as may be deemed appropriate to the post, including working within Orthoderm Clinic (our sister clinic) when required.

Essential criteria:

- 2 years’ experience working within a healthcare setting.
- Willingness to undertake training and development.
- Competent to perform clinical observations.
- Ability to deal with patient needs in a sensitive and caring manner.
- Excellent communication skills.
- Excellent organisational skills.
- Ability to work well as part of a team as well as on own initiative.
- Ability to follow clear instruction and feedback to registered nursing staff.

Desirable criterion:

- Experience working within a theatre setting.
- NVQ Level 2 in Healthcare or equivalent.
- Ability to carry out venepuncture.
