Lead Nurse Outpatients

We are seeking to appoint a Lead Outpatient Nurse to join our team in Hillsborough. The post-holder will be responsible for providing clinical leadership and management of the Clinic’s Outpatient clinics including ensuring the delivery of high-quality patient care, managing the outpatient nursing team, and ensuring compliance with relevant policies and procedures.

Key Responsibilities:

Ensure Safe and Effective Practice

- Provide skilled nursing care within the outpatient department and demonstrate a high standard of nursing practices.
- Deliver high quality patient care that is clinically effective, evidence-based and appropriate.
- Work alongside the multi-disciplinary team, to ensure the safety of patients at all times.
- Adhere to DHSSPS and NMC guidelines for practice requirements and standards, for example, safe handling, administration, storage and custody of medicinal products.
- Maintain own professional and personal development in accordance with NMC (2018) the Code:  Professional Standards of Practice and Behaviour for Nurses and Midwives.
- Maintain effective records management ensuring all documentation written or electronic is managed in line with organisational and NMC (2009) guidelines.
- In collaboration with the Theatre Lead and Orthoderm’s senior Nurse, manage off-duty/annual leave arrangements to ensure our clinics have adequate cover.
- Establish and maintain relationships based on mutual respect communicating on a regular basis with the patient/client, relatives and carers in the provision of care and services.- 
- Ensure compliance with GDPR and Data Protection.

- Ensure evidence-based care is provided to agreed standards within the clinic.
- Assist in implementing and monitoring policies, procedures and protocols.

Leadership

- Provide clinical leadership to the Outpatient team, ensuring that all patients receive high-quality care and treatment.
- Plan and deliver relevant training programs and induction plans to ensure continuous professional development for our Nurses.

 

Management

- Manage the Outpatients Nursing team, including training, and development, ensuring that all staff are competent and motivated to deliver high-quality care.
- Involved in the recruitment and selection of staff.

Performance Management

- Monitor and manage the performance of the Outpatient team, ensuring that all staff are meeting their objectives and delivering high-quality care.

Enhance the patient/client experience

- Promote a caring environment where equality and diversity issues are respected and patients/clients and their carers are enabled to be partners in their care.
- Demonstrate appropriate care values including: compassion, respect, empathy, treating people with dignity, integrity, courage, responsibility, imagination and adaptability.

Patient Safety/Environment

- Maintain a safe and clean environment for staff, patients/clients and visitors by ensuring compliance with legislation, policies and protocols including health and safety, healthcare associated infection, risk management and critical incident reporting.
- Ensure own awareness of environmental issues and take appropriate action as per our policies.
- Ensure safe and effective use of equipment.
- Ensure near misses, incidents, accidents and faulty devices are recorded, reported, investigated and learning disseminated.

Professional Development

- Maintain professional development, keeping up to date with current best practice and developments in the field.
- Participate in training and other learning as required.
- Participate in annual appraisal/development review.
- Promote a person-centred culture to facilitate good staff relationships and morale among staff.
- Challenge appropriately and confidently where standards of care fall below that which the Clinical Manager would expect.

Communication

- Communicate effectively with patients, families, and other healthcare professionals, ensuring that all relevant information is shared appropriately.

Continuous Improvement

- Lead on quality improvement initiatives, ensuring that the service is improving and delivering the best possible care to patients eg use of audit, patient/client feedback and reflection on practice by self and other members of the team.
- Maintain good communication with patients/clients and relatives/carers ensuring that their individual needs are met, and report issues to the Clinical Manager as required.

Compliance

- Ensure compliance with relevant policies and procedures, including infection control, health and safety, and safeguarding.

Resource Management

- Manage the outpatient department ensuring that resources are ordered and used effectively and efficiently.
- Seek to deliver a safe and effective service within allocated resources, ensuring the resources are used to maximum effect.

Essential criteria:

- Registered Nurse on Part 1 of the live NMC Register.
- 5 years’ post registration experience including 3 years within an outpatient setting.
- Experience of deputising for Lead Nurse and acting as Nurse in Charge. 
- Excellent clinical skills and knowledge.
- Ability to lead, manage and motivate others.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work under pressure and manage competing priorities.
- Commitment to continuous professional development.
- Understanding of relevant policies and procedures, including infection control, health and safety, and safeguarding.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Experience of resource management.
- Understanding of quality improvement methodologies.
- Commitment to patient safety and delivering high-quality care.

Desirable criterion:

Experience working as an outpatient nurse in Ophthalmology.
